oL

An oL error code appears when your laundry load is too large for your washer. You will have to redistribute and/or remove some items from the drum to get operations to continue.

Overloading puts a lot of stress on your washer. Over time, this can cause premature component failure, which will require replacements.

oL

Solution: To prevent overloading your Maytag Bravos XL, measure your laundry. Load the clothes loosely and evenly around the washer basket.

  • Step 1: Add heavily soiled items first. Place items one at a time to prevent them from getting tangled.
  • Step 2: Redistribute the garments loosely around the washplate without covering its center. Make sure the center stays visible when you’re loading laundry.
  • Step 3: Mix different-sized garments to prevent tangling during wash cycles.

Use this as your reference when you’re determining the load size for your washer.

Load SizeMeasurement
Regular6 lbs
Large11 lbs
Extra Large21 lbs

A regular load takes up half the space of the washer basket, while a large one occupies ¾ of its space. An extra-large load, on the other hand, fills the drum but has enough space for the clothes to tumble freely.

uL

When your washer detects an unbalanced load, it will automatically perform a balance correction procedure. It will add a large amount of water to the tub in an attempt to redistribute the clothing.

Then, it will drain the water and refill it before spinning again.

If the washer is unable to correct the problem, it will stop the cycle and flash the uL error code. The most common causes of an unbalanced load include washing single items, improper leveling, overfilling the drum, and using incorrect cycles.

What you’ll need:

  • Carpenter’s level

Solution: Confirm that your Maytag Bravos XL washer is leveled properly. Follow these steps to ensure that it is properly leveled.

  • Step 1: Place a carpenter’s level along the gap between the cabinet and the top of the washer.
  • Step 2: Rotate the leveling legs at the bottom of the washer in a clockwise direction to lower them. Or, rotate them in a counterclockwise direction to raise them.
  • Step 3: Use the carpenter’s level again to verify that the washer is balanced from side to side.
  • Step 4: Make the necessary adjustments until the washer is balanced.

Other tips:

  • Never wash items individually. Keep the washer balanced by washing a towel or a rug with other items.
  • Don’t overfill the washer basket with water.
  • Wash your laundry using the recommended cycles. For example, use the Bulky cycle for oversized, non-absorbent items like comforters and poly-filled jackets.
  • Load garments loosely and evenly around the washer. Never cover the center of the wash plate with your laundry.

LF

An LF error code means that the washer is taking too long to fill with water. It is usually caused by a minor issue, such as an obstruction or a kink in the supply hose.

However, before you do any repairs, check if the hot and cold water faucets are even on. The fix can be as simple as turning on the faucet.

You also have to make sure that both hoses are attached to their valves in order for the washer to run or fill properly.

Clogged Inlet Screens

Each water supply valve comes with a tiny mesh filter, also called an inlet screen. It catches dirt and debris from your water supply to prevent your clean laundry from getting soiled.

If you don’t clean the screens annually or as often as you should, all that gunk can obstruct the flow of water into the washer.

Solution: To clean the water inlet screens of your Maytag washer, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Disconnect the washer from its power source.
  • Step 2: Remove the hot water fill hose by rotating the coupling by hand. Use pliers, if necessary.
  • Step 3: Repeat the same step for the cold water fill hose.
  • Step 4: Use pliers to pull out the inlet screens on both valves.
  • Step 5: Wipe the mesh screens using cotton swabs or soak the screens in soapy water.
  • Step 6: Wipe the screens with a soft cloth or let them air dry before reinstalling them into the washer.
  • Step 7: Use pliers to reinsert the inlet screens.
  • Step 8: Attach the hot water fill hose to the inlet valve to the right. Rotate the coupling by hand until it is snug, then secure the connection using pliers.
  • Step 9: Repeat the same step to attach the cold water fill hose.
  • Step 10: Restore power to the washer.
  • Step 11: Turn it on and run a test cycle to check if the washer fills and starts.

Damaged Control Board

The control board regulates a variety of functions in your washing machine, including spinning, drying, and filling. When it is defective, it can affect its many functions, which is why it is so hard to diagnose.

Using a multimeter, you can test the control board for continuity. If it has none, the fuse board is defective and needs replacement.

What you’ll need:

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • ¼” nut driver
  • Pliers
  • Multimeter
  • New main control board

Solutions: Check the main control board for continuity using a multimeter. If the board lacks continuity, it is defective and requires a replacement.

  • Step 1: Disconnect the washer from power.
  • Step 2: Turn off the hot and cold water faucets, and disconnect the supply hoses.
  • Step 3: Move the washer away from the wall to access the back panel.
  • Step 4: Remove the bolts mounting the panel using a ¼” nut driver.
  • Step 5: Slip a flathead screwdriver under the front control panel housing and carefully pry it open.
  • Step 6: Disconnect the wire harness and set the control panel aside.
  • Step 7: Take a photo of the wires connected to the main control board. Use it as a reference for the reassembly process.
  • Step 8: Unplug the switch wire connectors on the control board, including the power wire. Then, release the bracket and retainer using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Step 9: Detach the air pressure tube.
  • Step 10: Use a ¼” nut driver to remove the screws securing the control board.
  • Step 11: Remove the center knob from the control panel. Lift the control board to isolate it from the washer.
  • Step 12: Inspect the control board for burns and discoloration.
  • Step 13: Use a multimeter to check for continuity. Rotate the dial to the Continuity Test mode.
  • Step 14: Place each probe on each side of the fuse on the control board.

If you hear the multimeter beep, the fuse is fine and the control board is functioning as it should. However, if there’s no beep, the fuse is defective, which means that the control board requires replacement.

Quick Note:

The main control board is one of the more expensive replacement parts. Thus, you can save hundreds of dollars by replacing the part yourself.

If you have a decade-old washer, you might want to consider buying a new unit instead of replacing the control board.

To replace the main control board on a Maytag Bravos XL washer, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Disconnect the washer from its power source.
  • Step 2: Turn off its water supply, then disconnect both hot and cold hoses.
  • Step 3: Move the washer away from the wall and turn it around to access the back panel.
  • Step 4: Use a ¼” nut driver to remove the bolts mounting the panel.
  • Step 5: Insert the flathead screwdriver under the front control panel housing, then pry it open.
  • Step 6: Disconnect the wire harness and set the control panel aside.
  • Step 7: Take a photo of the wires connected to the main control board. Use it as a reference for the reassembly process.
  • Step 8: Disconnect the switch wire connectors on the control board, including the power wire. Then, use a flathead screwdriver to release the bracket and retainer.
  • Step 9: Detach the air pressure tube.
  • Step 10: Use a ¼” nut driver to unfasten the screws securing the control board.
  • Step 11: Remove the center knob, then lift the faulty control board to remove it from the panel.
  • Step 12: Get your new control board. Before installing it, transfer the wire retaining bracket from the old assembly to the new one.
  • Step 13: Align the control board with the slots on the panel.
  • Step 14: Reinstall the screws to secure the board. Then, return the center control knob.
  • Step 15: Plug all the wire connectors to the correct terminals on the new control board. Refer to your photo to confirm the original placement.
  • Step 16: Secure the wires on the bracket and retainer.
  • Step 17: Reattach the air pressure tube.
  • Step 18: Align the control panel with the rear panel, then push down until it snaps into place.
  • Step 19: Reinstall the screws on the rear panel.
  • Step 20: Reconnect all the hoses.
  • Step 21: Turn on the water supply and restore power to the washer.

Ld

An Ld error code indicates that your washer is unable to drain or is taking too long to do so. Whether you have a standpipe, a laundry tub, or a floor drain, you’ll usually come across this error when you don’t install it correctly.

Maytag has different requirements for each type of drain facility. Make sure to meet such requirements to prevent any drain errors, as well as potential flooding.

Incorrect Drain Hose Installation (Standpipe Drain System)

One of the most common drain facilities is a standpipe. Setting up this drain system is quite easy, but it’s also easy to get it wrong, which not only prevents the washer from draining but also enables siphoning.

Dirty water can flow into the drum, soiling your clothes. As a result, you’ll have to rewash the clothes to get rid of the dirt.

Incorrect Drain Hose Installation (Standpipe Drain System)

What you’ll need:

  • Measuring tape
  • Cable tie

Solution: To install a standpipe drain system, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Measure the height of the standpipe. It should measure at least 39” and no more than 96” high to promote better drainage.

Contact your local plumbing services if the standpipe doesn’t meet such a requirement.

  • Step 2: If the measurements are correct, insert the drain hose 4.5” into the standpipe. Never insert the hose too far down the pipe as it will cause siphoning, which can fill the washer basket with dirty water.
  • Step 3: Secure the drain hose to the standpipe using the supplied tie.

Incorrect Drain Hose Installation (Laundry Tub)

A laundry tub can also be used as a draining facility for your washing machine. Instead of connecting the hose to a drain pipe, you can place it over the tub, which should measure at least 39” and no more than 96”.

To ensure proper drainage, you need to have a 20-gallon tub with a carry-away capacity of 72 gallons per minute.

Incorrect Drain Hose Installation (Laundry Tub)

What you’ll need:

  • Measuring tape
  • Cable tie

Solution: To install a laundry tub drain system, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Confirm that the laundry tub measures at least 39” and no more than 96” high from the floor to its topmost part.
  • Step 2: Place the drain hose over the laundry tub. Insert the hose 4.5” into the tub to prevent siphoning.
  • Step 3: Secure the drain hose to the leg of the laundry tub.

Incorrect Drain Hose Installation (Floor Drain)

If you’re using a floor drain, you need a siphon break kit, which can be purchased separately. This prevents dirty water from re-entering the washer during cycles.

Incorrect Drain Hose Installation (Floor Drain)

What you’ll need:

  • Siphon break kit

Solution: To set up a floor drain system, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Remove the pre-installed drain clamp on the hose.
  • Step 2: Elevate the siphon break at least 28” from the floor.
  • Step 3: Insert the hose about 4.5” into the drain pipe.

HC

On a Maytag Bravos XL washer, an HC error code appears to let you know that the water supply hoses are reversed. The hot water hose is connected to the cold water valve, while the cold water hose is connected to the hot water valve.

What you’ll need:

  • Pliers

Solution: To troubleshoot an HC error code, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Turn off the hot and cold water supply faucets.
  • Step 2: Remove the hot water fill hose by rotating the coupling by hand. Use pliers, if necessary.
  • Step 3: Repeat the same step for the cold water fill hose.
  • Step 4: Connect the hot water fill hose to the hot water valve. Secure the connection by rotating the coupling by hand or using pliers.
  • Step 5: Connect the cold water fill hose to the cold water valve. Secure the connection to prevent any leaks.

Sd

An Sd error code appears when your washer detects excess suds in the drum. This is most likely due to incorrect detergent use.

If you use a regular detergent on this high-efficiency washer, it will create lots of suds during wash cycles, leading to inefficient cleaning and leaks. Adding too much detergent as well, even the right kind, can produce excess suds.

Incorrect Type of Detergent

Using regular detergent on a Maytag Bravos XL washer will lead to extended wash times and reduced cleaning performance. It can even cause premature component failure.

Solution: Only use High-Efficiency detergent for your Maytag Bravos XL washing machine. Look for the HE label on the detergent’s package to be sure.

Here are other recommendations from Maytag that might help.

  • Use Swash laundry detergent, which has a low-sudsing and quick-dispersing formula.
  • For single-dose laundry packets, add them to the washer basket before adding clothes. Never add the clothes before any laundry products.
  • Pour a measured amount of HE detergent into the dispenser.
  • Never add single-dose laundry packets to the dispenser.

Incorrect Amount of Detergent

More isn’t always better, especially when it comes to detergent. Your clothes won’t get any cleaner if you double the amount of detergent you need.

Unfortunately, it only leads to excess suds and poor cleaning. The excess detergent can even clog the hoses, valves, and other internal components, causing draining issues for your Maytag Bravos XL.

What you’ll need:

  • Affresh cleaner
  • Towels

Solution: Use the Clean Washer Cycle to get rid of the excess suds in your Maytag Bravos XL washer. Follow these steps to resolve your problem.

  • Step 1: Run an empty cycle on your washer. Transfer your laundry to a separate container while you clean the excess foam.
  • Step 2: Add an affresh Washer Cleaner tablet to the bottom of the washer basket. Never add it to the detergent dispenser.
  • Step 3: Close the lid and select the Clean Washer Cycle.
  • Step 4: Press the Start/Pause button to begin the cycle. Don’t interrupt the cycle so you can get the best results.
  • Step 5: Once the cycle has stopped, run a Rinse/Drain & Spin cycle to get rid of any excess cleaning product.
  • Step 6: After it stops, leave the door open to let the drum dry. Clear away any excess detergent around the dispenser area using a damp cloth.
  • Step 7: Clean in and around the washer door.

After, you can run a new cycle without detergent to wash off any excess suds and detergent residue on your laundry.

Always measure the amount of detergent before pouring it into the washer’s dispenser. Since products have varying concentrations, check the label’s recommendations.

If the label doesn’t list the detergent’s concentration, calculate it yourself. Use the table below as your guide.

ConcentrationMeasurement (No. of ounces / No. of loads)
2X1.5–2.49
3X0.9–1.49
4X0.7–0.89
5X0.5–0.69
6X0.3–0.49

dL

If your Maytag washer isn’t starting a cycle, a potential culprit is an unlocked door, which can be verified with a dL error code on the display. It can be caused by a piece of clothing that gets trapped between the door and its latch, preventing it from locking.

However, it can also be caused by a broken latch. Whether from slamming the door too hard or natural wear and tear, a broken latch can no longer be repaired and must be replaced to get the washer to operate again.

What you’ll need:

  • ¼” nut driver
  • Holding strap
  • Tape
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • New lid switch

Solution: Test the lid switch for continuity to confirm that it is defective and needs replacement. Follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Unplug the washer or turn off the power at the circuit breaker.
  • Step 2: Shut off the water supply to the washer.
  • Step 3: Disconnect the drain and water supply hoses. Tape the door shut.
  • Step 4: Move the washer away from the wall to access the back panel.
  • Step 5: Use the ¼” nut driver to unfasten the screws on the small cover and the rear access panel. Set the cover and panel aside.
  • Step 6: Unplug the lid switch’s wire connector. Refer to your user manual, if necessary.
  • Step 7: Remove the plastic retainer clip. Then, squeeze the two prongs on the wire harness retainer and push it down to release it.
  • Step 8: Use the ¼” nut driver to remove the two screws securing the top panel.
  • Step 9: Pull the washer’s top forward and lift it up until the tabs on the rear panel fit into the slots on the top.
  • Step 10: Get the holding strap and attach the hooks to the washer’s top and main body.
  • Step 11: Use the flathead screwdriver to pry the lid switch out.
  • Step 12: Remove the wire harnesses from the retaining clips. Then, pull the harness out and set it aside.
  • Step 13: Rotate the dial on the multimeter to the lowest ohms of resistance.
  • Step 14: Touch each of the probes to the switch’s power input terminals. Then, actuate the switch.

Your multimeter will display about 0 ohms of resistance if the switch has continuity. However, if it shows little to no change when the switch is actuated, it means that the component is defective and requires a replacement.

To replace your Maytag Bravos XL washer’s faulty lid switch, follow these steps:

  • Step 10: Get the holding strap and attach the hooks to the washer’s main top and body.
  • Step 11: Use the flathead screwdriver to pry the lid switch out.
  • Step 12: Remove the wire harnesses from the retaining clips. Then, pull the harness out and set it aside.
  • Step 13: Get the new lid lock assembly and slide it into position until it is seated properly.
  • Step 14: Insert the wire harness into the opening on the main top. Then, slip the wire under the retaining clips to keep it secure.
  • Step 15: Push the wire harness retainer into the slot on the washer’s top until it snaps into place.
  • Step 16: Unhook the holding straps. Close the washer’s top by simply pressing it down until it is secure.
  • Step 17: Attach the retaining clip of the lid switch’s wire harness. Then, reconnect the wire to the control board.
  • Step 18: Use the ¼” nut driver to reinstall the two screws that secure the top panel.
  • Step 19: Reinstall the rear access panel and its screws. After, mount the small cover.
  • Step 20: Reconnect the hoses and turn on the water supply.
  • Step 21: Restore power to the washer. Run a test cycle to confirm that the door latches and the unit drains properly.

dU

A dU error indicates that the door can’t unlock after the cycle. In most cases, this happens when you place heavy objects on top of the lid, such as piles of clothes or the whole laundry basket.

Solution: Remove the heavy object on top of the washer’s lid. Simply wait until the error clears and the door unlocks.

lid

A lid error code doesn’t really indicate any problem with your Maytag Bravos XL washer. It appears whenever you leave the washer door open for more than 10 minutes.

Aside from displaying the error code, the washer will reset the cycle and automatically drain the water out of the tub.

Solution: Just close the washer door to clear the error code. If the cycle has reset, re-enter your preferred settings and click the Start/Pause button.
