Decoding the Maytag E01 F03 Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It

How to Decode Maytag E01 F03 Error Code

Have you ever had your Maytag washing machine act a bit wonky and start flashing the E01 and F03 error codes? I know that they’re real head-scratchers, but you’ve come to the right place!

In this quick guide, we’re going to break down the Maytag E01 F03 code and help you figure out how to fix it.

Let’s make your washer troubleshooting as easy as 1, 2, 3.

What does the Maytag E01 F03 error code mean?

Maytag’s E01 F03 code could mean two things: the control board can’t detect the tub’s water level or the washer’s lid is locked.

The root of these problems can be traced back to faulty washing machine components or clogged pipes.

With that said, let’s take a closer look at what’s really triggering the error code and identify the best ways to solve them.

Causes of the E01 F03 Error Code and How to Solve Them

There’s obviously something wrong with your washer when this error code flashes, but without knowing its specific causes, you won’t be able to fix it.

That’s why I’m sharing with you this list of the Maytag E01 F03 error causes and solutions.

CauseSolution
Faulty pressure sensor• Disconnect your Maytag washer from the power outlet.
• Remove the screws of the control panel at the back of the washer.
• Take the control panel’s cover off.
• Get a putty knife and use it to lift the control panel.
• Flip it forward to access the pressure switch or pressure sensor.
• The sensor is a round component with a pipe and wires connected to it.
• Remove the pressure sensor hose then disconnect the wires connected to the component.
• Get a multimeter, which you buy from hardware stores.
• Put the multimeter to the ohms setting.
• Let the multimeter’s two probes touch the sensor’s terminals.
• If the multimeter shows a 0 reading, the pressure switch must be replaced.
• Purchase a new water pressure sensor from Maytag’s official store or hardware stores.
• Remove the screws securing the sensor on the machine.
• Unmount the defective pressure sensor and replace it with a new one.
• Screw the new pressure switch in place. Then, attach the air hose and the wires to it.
• Put the control panel’s cover back. Secure it with its screws.
• Plug in your washer to its power source.
Clogged air trap pipe• Unplug your washer from the power source.
• Unscrew your washer’s back cover to access the air trap pipe or vent hose.
• The pipe or hose is a short, thick, and black plastic that you’ll easily spot after opening the washer.
• Using a wrench, unfasten the metal wire securing the pipe in place to remove it.
• After removing, inspect the pipe for any blockage.
• Get a brush and clean the pipe’s interior thoroughly. Remove any debris and residue.
• Next, reinstall the pipe on its previous placement. Secure it again with its metal fastener,
• Put the machine’s cover back. Reattach its screws.
• Plug your washer into the power outlet.
Malfunctioning control board• Unplug your washer from the power outlet.
• Pull the control knob off from the washer’s control panel.
• Remove the screws of the control panel at the back of the washer and take off its cover.
• Using a putty knife, lift the control panel and flip it forward to access the control board.
• The control board is the big square component to which most wires are attached.
• Remove the locking tabs to access the wires.
• Remember the wires’ placements before disconnecting them from the control board.
• Next, pull the air hose off the control board. It’s a white or semi-transparent plastic tube.
• Unscrew the control board and remove it from the panel. Replace it with your new control board.
• Screw the new control board in place then connect the air hose.
• Next, connect the wires to the new control board and close the locking tabs.
• Flip the control panel upright and snap it in place. Put its back cover on and screw it securely.
• Plug the washer into the power source.

Let’s dive into the details and understand these troubleshooting steps better.

Faulty Pressure Sensor

Your washer’s pressure sensor is in charge of monitoring and detecting the water level that goes into your tub.

If the sensor is faulty or broken, it won’t correctly sense the water level and will communicate wrong information to the control board. This will result in an error.

Solution: Disconnect your Maytag washer from the power outlet to avoid any accidents.

If your washer is positioned against the wall, move it until you can access its back.

Remove the screws of the control panel at the back of the washer and then take the cover off.

Using a putty knife, lift the control panel and flip it forward to have easier access to the pressure switch or pressure sensor.

You’ll identify the sensor as a round component with a plastic air hose and wires connected to it.

Remember the hose and wires’ placements. After noting their positions, pull off the pressure sensor hose as well as the wires connected to the component.

Get a multimeter and set it to the ohms setting.

Put the multimeter’s two probes on the sensor’s terminals. If the multimeter reads 0, the pressure switch is broken and must be replaced.

Buy a new water pressure sensor from Maytag’s store, hardware stores, or appliance parts stores.

Remove the screws securing the sensor on the machine.

Unmount the defective pressure sensor and replace it with a new one.

Screw the new pressure switch in place. Then, attach the air hose and the wires to it.

Put the control panel’s cover back. Secure it with its screws.

Plug in your washer to its power source.

Quick tip:
Since your water level sensor is malfunctioning, it’s most likely that your washer is still full of water.
Make sure to drain the water in the tub first before replacing the pressure switch.

Clogged Air Trap Pipe

A clogged air trap pipe will prevent your washer from properly draining. If there’s water left inside the tub, the sensors will detect it and automatically lock the machine’s lid.

With the tub still containing water and your washer’s lid securely locked, the E01 F03 error code will show up.

Solution: First, unplug your washer from the power source.

Remove the screws of your washer’s back cover to have full access to the air trap pipe.

To locate the air trap pipe, look for a short, thick, and black plastic hose that you’ll quickly spot after opening the washer.

Get a  wrench to unfasten the metal wire securing the pipe in place. Once the metal wire is loosened, remove the air trap pipe for cleaning.

See if the pipe is full of dirt, soap residue, or lint. Get a brush and remove all debris inside it.

Next, reattach the pipe to the machine. Secure it in place with its metal fastener,

Put the machine’s cover back and reattach its screws. Plug your washer into the power source.

Malfunctioning Control Board

Even if your Maytag washer’s other components are in peak condition, it will still flash an error code once the control board is out of commission.

A malfunctioning control board will give wrong readings or won’t detect the water level at all. To continue enjoying hassle-free laundry, you’ll have to replace it if it’s broken.

Solution: Disconnect your washer from the power outlet first.

Next, remove the screws of the control panel at the back of the washer to take off its cover.

Use a putty knife to lift the control panel and flip it forward. This will give you proper access to the control board.

The control board is a big square component with multiple wires connected to it.

Remove the locking tabs to access the wires under them. Note the wires’ positions before disconnecting them from the control board.

Then, pull the air hose off the control board, which is the white or semi-transparent plastic tube.

Unscrew the control board. Remove it from the panel to replace it with a new one.

You can buy a new control board from Maytag’s official store or appliance parts stores.

Mount the new control board in place with its screws then connect the air hose. After, connect the wires to the new control board and close the locking tabs.

Flip the control panel and position it in place. Put its cover on and screw it back securely.

Plug the washer into the power outlet.
