How to Change the Water Filter in a Samsung Refrigerator

How to Change the Water Filter in a Samsung Refrigerator

Are you scared that something might go wrong if you try to remove and replace your water filter? It does feel like a complicated task at first, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the process.

Don’t worry, this article will provide everything you need to know about your refrigerator’s water filter — from how to change it to how to properly conduct maintenance for it.

All the steps are easy and manageable as long as you follow our tips and instructions thoroughly. You won’t be needing any professional help with any of them.

How to Change the Water Filter in a Samsung Refrigerator

Changing the water filter in a Samsung refrigerator can be done in a few steps.

Start with turning off the refrigerator’s water supply, remove the old filter from its housing by turning it counterclockwise, then insert the water filter in the housing and rotate clockwise until it snaps in place.

These steps may vary as there are two different sets of instructions for removing and reinstalling the water filter.

This is because Samsung refrigerators use three different variations of water filters depending on the model of the refrigerator.

Changing each water filter type only takes 5 steps each:

Fo HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN filter types:

  • Step 1: Turn off the water supply and then locate the water filter. You can find the filter housing somewhere around the crisper compartment of your refrigerator.
  • Step 2: Open the water filter cover, and gently rotate the old water filter counterclockwise to unlock it.
  • Step 3: Pull the water filter out of its housing.
  • Step 4: To install the new water filter, remove its protective cap then push it into the housing and rotate it clockwise.
  • Step 5: Make sure that the lock symbol on your new water filter matches the indicator line and that it snaps onto the filter housing.

For HAFCU1 filter types:

  • Step 1: Turn off the water supply and locate the water filter. You can find its housing at the upper right-hand side of your refrigerator.
  • Step 2: Twist the old water filter to the left to unlock it.
  • Step 3: Gently pull the water filter down once unlocked.
  • Step 4: Push the new water filter into the housing and turn it to the right.
  • Step 5: Make sure that the notch on your new water filter matches the arrow on the filter housing and that it snaps on properly.

Now that you know how to change your Samsung refrigerator’s water filter, you also need to know when to change it, why you need to change it regularly, and how to determine which water filter you need.

These are all essential information to keep your refrigerator working properly and to avoid any inconveniences related to the water filter.

How do you know when to change the water filter in your Samsung refrigerator?

How do you know when to change the water filter in your Samsung refrigerator

There is a built-in ‘Water Filter’ indicator on the refrigerator control panel which lights up or glows red when your filter is due for replacement.

However, there are other signs that your filter needs a replacement immediately.

If your Samsung refrigerator is leaking water from its filter, then that’s a good indicator that the filter might need replacement as soon as possible. It’s also possible that your filter needs replacing if the refrigerator’s water is not working properly.

Another good indicator that it’s time to change your water filter is if the water dispensed from your refrigerator has a strange taste or odorous smell.

This could mean that the water being dispensed is contaminated due to the filter being unable to function anymore.

Why You Need to Change Your Water Filter Every 6 Months

The refrigerator’s water filter is important to service regularly because its integrity diminishes overtime – which leads to ineffective filtration.

This is done to avoid health risks and to keep the refrigerator’s functions well-maintained.

As mentioned earlier, your Samsung refrigerator has a built-in feature to let you know that your water filter needs to be changed.

This feature activates every 6 months to remind you to replace the old worn filter with a new one.

The water filter is essential for providing clean water in your refrigerator.

It filters out possible harmful elements from your water source such as herbicides, pesticides, lead, mercury, and asbestos – all of which pose serious health risks.

A functioning water filter is also important for your refrigerator to operate properly.

At around 6 months, your water filter will be worn out – letting it operate further could lead to it forming cracks or cause clogging in the filter.

A worn-out filter can cause more problems for your refrigerator. It could create water leakages from the filter or dispenser, weak water pressure within the refrigerator, and even foul odors because of poor water filtration.

Always be ready whenever the 6-month lifespan of your water filter is about to come to an end so that you‘re prepared to easily replace it with a new one.

How to Determine Which Water Filter You Need

A Samsung refrigerator comes with a serial number that helps identify which water filter type it uses.

You can find the serial number in the user manual or at the bottom left side of your refrigerator.

Determining the right water filter type is always an important thing for your refrigerator’s maintenance.

Not only is buying the wrong filter a waste of money, but it’s also possible that it can cause other problems.

It’s also important to note that you have to buy a Samsung-branded water filter.

There are other filter brands that may fit your Samsung refrigerator, but that would leave risks of incompatibility, so it’s better to be safe instead.

Now that the more important reminders are out of the way, it is fairly easy to determine which exact type of water filter you need for your refrigerator.

Here is a table of which filter type is compatible with which models:

Quick Note:

You can also determine the water filter type your Samsung fridge uses by looking at the water filter housing.

If the filter housing is located near the crisper compartment and is round, then you will need a HAF-CIN filter. If the housing is square, then you need the HAF-QIN filter instead.

The HAF-CU1 filter is used by older Samsung refrigerator models. This is the easiest to determine because the filter housing is located somewhere in the top right corner of the refrigerator instead of near the crisper compartment.

See? Changing your Samsung refrigerator’s water filter is very easy and it doesn’t take too much effort to do so.

Just remember our tips for servicing the water filter and you won’t need to worry about any problems coming from it anytime soon.
